Talking to a doctor about symptoms is the first step—and it can sometimes be the hardest. These women took that step to see if treatment was right for them. Use the Doctor Discussion Guide to start the conversation with your doctor about hot flashes due to menopause.

Gloria
I'm Gloria Reuben, and this is The VEOZAH Book Club.

Hello, ladies. It is so good to see all of you. Today we're partnering with Astellas to share our stories about moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause. Of course, just like you, I have had a journey before. I found what works for me. Before we get into our stories, let's do our intros. Your name and how long ago you started feeling hot flashes due to menopause.

Tamar
My name is Tamar and it's been about two and a half years.

Annet
My name is Annet and it's been around two years.

Chelsie
And I'm Chelsie. It's been about two and a half years for me as well.

Gloria
Thanks for sharing that, ladies. Now I am going to share my book that was especially made just for this occasion. I've called it Embrace the Change. I started experiencing hot flashes quite a few years ago. It felt like this lava flow and I would just start to sweat and it just, it was so disruptive. And I never knew when a hot flash would erupt.

And I discovered VEOZAH, a treatment for moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause. VEOZAH reduces the number and severity of hot flashes. Hot flashes are also known as vasomotor symptoms or VMS. We should be proud to age and embrace the changes that come with it. So tell us the names of your books and why you chose the titles.

Chelsie, why don't you start?

Chelsie
So the title of my book is not a fan of the fans, and I chose that title because in the beginning, when I was having really bad hot flashes, I'm having fans everywhere—purses, bags, car, desk, jackets, pockets, just carrying them around everywhere just to be preemptive when I had a hot flash. I got to the point where I was tired of having to not necessarily think about what I was wearing, but think about this fan that I needed.

So I'm not a fan of the fan.

Gloria
Yes, I like that title is so true. How about you Tamar?

Tamar
My book is Three Shades of Tomato.

Gloria
Three Shades of Tomato.

Tamar
Because that's what I would turn into. When I would get a hot flash, it would start at my chest, work its way up my neck and then into my face. Sometimes I would be out in public and people would stop and ask me if I was okay. I'm having a hot flash.

Gloria
I can imagine that maybe you felt extremely embarrassing and awkward, Annet. Sure. Let's see your book.

Annet
The title of my book: Surprise Sauna.

Hot flashes would appear at the most inopportune times, on dates, when I had professional events to go to or meetings. I remember going to the mall and, like a friend of mine, worked at one of the stores. And as we were in conversation, I started to just break out in sweat. My friend didn't say anything and I think he wanted to, like, not embarrass me.

My hair was dripping wet. My face was just flushed. I had water dripping down my shirt. The embarrassment. I will never forget that day.

Gloria
So indicative of our experiences, that disruption about what if this happens when I'm at work?

Tamar
Once I started taking VEOZAH, I had new wardrobe options.

Chelsie
Being able to go out without a whole plan of do I have a fan? What will I be doing? You know, be spontaneous. Go ahead and leave.

Annet
You know, having that confidence. Like to go out and not have to think about it. And it's less laundry.

Chelsie
I was having hot flashes several years before I found VEOZAH, and it wasn't until they got severe that I sought treatment. The next day I ended up calling my doctor and I'm like, hey, I need an appointment. This is what's happening and we need to talk. We need to figure something out. And when I got there, we had our conversation and she told me about VEOZAH.

Gloria
My doctor monitored my liver with monthly blood tests for the first three months. Then again after six months and nine months after starting VEOZAH. We have to take the initiative, participate in our own healing.

Annet
I did my research and then when I found out about this medication, you know, I had my blood test done and we moved forward and I said, this is the route I want to take.

Gloria
It's important to talk to your doctor about possible side effects you may experience. I want to empower more women to speak with their doctors about treatment options, and I like that VEOZAH is 100% hormone free.

Chelsie
For me, I thought it was just something that I had to deal with. But knowing that there's options like there's something that you can do and to speak about it.

Gloria
Right. Exactly. A woman does not have to suffer through it.

So now that you ladies are taking VEOZAH and you're having fewer hot flashes due to menopause, what are you looking forward to?

Annet
I'm moving forward in such a positive way, and this has been my experience with VEOZAH. But everyone's experience is different.

Gloria
Okay, ladies. So to close out, I want you to answer this question. If I could say something to my hot flashes, what would you tell them?

Chelsie
I would tell them. No more fans. No more fans.

Annet
You are not welcome here.

Gloria
Take a hike.

Gloria
VEOZAH can cause serious side effects, including liver problems. Expect blood tests before and during treatment. Stop VEOZAH and call your doctor if you have symptoms of liver problems like feeling more tired, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, itching, yellowing of eyes or skin, pale stool, dark urine or stomach pain.

Don't use VEOZAH if you have cirrhosis, severe kidney problems, kidney failure, or take CYP1A2 inhibitors. Ask your doctor about VEOZAH.

Experiencing hot flashes and night sweats—also known as VMS—due to menopause and thinking of starting VEOZAH? Six women, including actress Gloria Reuben, sit in The VEOZAH Hot Seat and share their real-life stories with hot flashes and their experiences taking VEOZAH.

Gloria’s story*

“The first time I saw an ad for VEOZAH, I literally stopped in my tracks because it [is] hormone-free, which is important to me.”

GLORIA REUBEN VO:

Welcome to the first edition of The VEOZAH Hot Seat.

We’re talking the “M” word: menopause.
And all things hot flashes and night sweats.
My name is Gloria Reuben. I am an actress, a singer, author, piano player, and a really good friend, and a really good daughter.

Well, I remember starting to experience hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause about 5 or 6 years ago. These hot flashes became, how do I say...disruptive...and just... I wasn’t able to ignore it anymore. It feels like a little bit of a lava flow. It starts right about here, and up it comes, and then, ah I feel it in my neck, and I feel it in my face and inevitably I’ll start sweating. I knew it was a natural process and yet, I was embarrassed at the same time. And that just didn’t feel right.

The first time I saw an ad for VEOZAH, I literally stopped in my tracks because it was about a hormone-free, which is important to me, FDA-approved treatment option for moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause, called VEOZAH. And I thought, “Uh, wait...what?”

I made an appointment with my doctor she and I talked about it. She did a blood test to check my liver, and has done follow-up testing since I’ve been taking VEOZAH. I would have less frequent and less severe hot flashes. I experienced relief from my hot flashes in about a week.

MAJOR STATEMENT VO:

VEOZAH can cause serious side effects, including liver problems. Expect blood tests before and during treatment.

Stop VEOZAH and call your doctor if you have symptoms of liver problems, like feeling more tired, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, itching, yellowing of eyes or skin, pale stool, dark urine, or stomach pain.

Don’t use VEOZAH if you have cirrhosis, severe kidney problems, kidney failure, or take CYP1A2 inhibitors.

GLORIA REUBEN VO:

The waking up many times during the night... I’m very glad to have found relief with VEOZAH. It was a wonderful thing to experience as my body responded so positively to the treatment. Because of VEOZAH I worry less about hot flashes disrupting me. Whether I’m on the set... Whether I’m on a date, spending time with my family or friends, and with less of that worry, I feel freer.

I really want to educate about VEOZAH, empower women to speak with a doctor, to determine, decide which treatment option is right for them.

I also want to encourage more conversation around the topic of menopause and to rid the shame that can surround this change—this natural change. Embrace the changes that come with aging.

Chelsie’s story*

“The advice that I would have for any woman who’s considering having a conversation with their doctor about their hot flashes is do it. Have the conversation. It’s your body, your life, have that conversation.”

Chelsie
Hi, my name is Chelsie and welcome to The VEOZAH Hot Seat. Today I'm partnering with Astellas to share my story about moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause. I have an amazing job. I work in HR so I was around 48 when I first started having symptoms. I noticed the first one I was on a call with a client and all of a sudden I just started getting warm and I'm thinking, am I having a hot flash?

Like, am I old enough? So then after that I started having night sweats, covers on, covers off, waking up hot, cold, hot cold. For me when I'm having a hot flash, it's like a little boiling. Then I just get wet. So it's just like you can be normal. Then you feel a little warmth coming on. Then it gets boiling, boiling, boiling hot, and then you just start getting wet.

Having hot flashes greatly impacted my life, because I could be in the middle of a conversation doing something extremely normal, and then I break out into a sweat. And it was somewhat embarrassing. I felt it aged me. Um, but before VEOZAH and I will have a hot flash, I kept fans everywhere in my purse, on my hips, in my pockets, and then, you know, doing a little dab with a tissue or a napkin or a handkerchief or something, or a towel.

Um, so I had something with me all the time to alleviate. I know what a symptom was going to be. So it was just like I could not leave the house without thinking, do you have a fan? What kind of fan do you have? Is it charged? Where are you going? Are you going to charge it in a car on the way? Do you have a hand fan? I just had to be prepared for hot flashes throughout my whole day.

I decided to seek treatment for hot flashes. Because I was in the middle of a job interview doing amazing, I would like to say. And then I broke out with this dripping deep sweat. This was like sweating than any sweat I had ever had before. I'm amazing in interviews, right? The fact that I was sweating was something was wrong with me, right?

I'm talking. Sweat dripped and hits the table, hits my resume. I'm dripping in sweat. So I'm still trying to answer a question and not ignore the fact that I became a faucet during the midst of this interview, after talking to my friends, just, you know, lamenting, I decided like, hey, I know who can help me with this, my doctor.

So I made an appointment. The first thing I told her, it was just like, hey, I'm having hot flashes with dripping, pouring sweat. And then we end up talking about options and then VEOZAH. That became the option that we decided on. VEOZAH is a once a day pill that you can take any time of the day, as long as you can take it the same time each day.

VEOZAH reduces the number and severity of hot flashes day and night. I've been following up with my doctors since I've been taking VEOZAH, and I will continue to get my liver checked as recommended by her. The advice that I would have for any woman who's considering having a conversation with their doctor about their hot flashes is do it.

Have the conversation. It's your body, your life to have that conversation. My doctor told me about the savings card. I was eligible to use it based off having commercial insurance, and so it made it an easy process for me. My experience of hot flashes now that with me being on VEOZAH, I am not breaking out into a sweat.

I'm feeling warm, but it goes away. VEOZAH reduced my hot flashes in about a week, and I have continued to experience fewer and less intense hot flashes due to menopause. This has been my experience with VEOZAH, but everyone else's experience is different. Now with VEOZAH, I can just go out whenever I'm ready.

I don't have to do a whole bunch of pre-planning. I'm making sure I have fans, making sure I have handkerchiefs or towels with me. I don't have to worry about all these other things that I was worrying about before I'm taking VEOZAH. Talk to your doctor and visit VEOZAH.com for savings and support.

Annet's story*

“I'm sharing my story with you today because women going through these changes shouldn't have to suffer. There are things that they can do.”

Annet
Hi, my name is Annet and I'm a registered nurse.

And welcome to The VEOZAH Hot Seat. I'm partnering with Astellas to share my journey with moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause. I started to experience hot flashes, probably in my middle 50s. It was really affecting my life and my lifestyle. I was experiencing hot flashes probably at least once a day, if not twice.

It made me feel very uncomfortable and very insecure. I would bring towels with me in my car. I would bring extra shirts to change into. There were times where it was just humiliating. A hot flash feels like having a sauna experience without the sauna. All of a sudden it's like you start slowly beading up and sweating, and before you know it, you look like you've stepped out of a shower situation.

This is the item that I had to bring with me everywhere. This was my go to my little towel and I took her everywhere I had to be. And I had to pat my head, my hair, because I was soaking wet. I looked like I had stepped out of a sauna. I would wake up in the night and my clothes and sheets were soaking wet. My symptoms really impacted my social life in a really negative way.

I first sought treatment when I got to the point where my hot flashes were getting disruptive to my routine day. My breaking point was when I was visiting my friend at the mall, and by the time I left, I felt like I needed a shower. I was so embarrassed. And at that point, enough was enough. I didn't want to live like this.

I went to my doctor and we discussed the different things that we could do, and she mentioned VEOZAH. I was happy it wasn't hormone based. It also reduces the number and severity of hot flashes day and night. My doctor ran blood tests to check my liver every month for the first three months, then again at six and nine months after I started to take it.

She also said there was a savings program that could be initiated, and I decided to go that route and I got my prescription filled. I had commercial insurance and the process was very smooth. When I started to take a VEOZAH within around two weeks or more, it started to kick in and my vasomotor symptoms were lessening and I was relieved.

I found VEOZAH and I can focus on hanging out with friends, going on dates, and worry less about whether I have a towel with me. This has been my experience with VEOZAH, but everyone's experience is different. When I look back on the situations that I was in and that I had to deal with, now I don't have to. And I'm very grateful for that.

Even now, I am enjoying the relief that VEOZAH has provided to me. I'm sharing my story with you today because women going through these changes shouldn't have to suffer. There are things that they can do. Like take VEOZAH. When women listen to other women's stories that it makes a huge difference in the way women think about which direction that they should go.

The best thing about VEOZAH is that it is effective. If you're experiencing hot flashes due to menopause, talk to your doctor. There may be an option for you.

VEOZAH can cause serious side effects, including liver problems. Expect blood tests before and during treatment. Stop VEOZAH and call your doctor if you have symptoms of liver problems like feeling more tired, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, itching, yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stool, dark urine or stomach pain.

Don't use VEOZAH if you have cirrhosis, severe kidney problems, kidney failure, or take CYP1A2 inhibitors.

Erica’s story*

“I would encourage any woman who’s going through this—speak to your doctor, advocate for yourself, don’t be afraid.”

Hi, I’m Erica, and welcome to The VEOZAH Hot Seat.

I’m partnering with Astellas to share my journey about moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause.

I’d say about 5 years ago I started noticing the hot flashes. People always said, “you’re too young.” Yes, okay, but you know I have my own “private summers,” as I call it, and everybody’s looking at you because you’re fanning, and trying to figure out what’s going on, but nobody understands it unless they walk the walk.

It starts, literally, I can describe it as at the top of your head, and it works all the way down, through your body, through your toes, and you’re burning. You’re burning up. My hair was soaking wet. I think it even changed the texture of my hair. I would wake up in the middle of the night, sweat dripping down my neck, all over.

I have the one pair of glasses that I pretty much quit wearing—they were some red glasses—because I would be out in public and they would fog up. And it’s embarrassing! Then, once I started taking VEOZAH, I brought them back into my life. Now I’m able to go back to wearing my red glasses, and I enjoy my red glasses. This has been my experience with VEOZAH, but everyone's experience is different.

Before I was prescribed VEOZAH, I got a liver blood test. My doctor monitored my liver with monthly blood tests for the first 3 months, then again at 6 and 9 months after starting VEOZAH. You just don’t understand it until you actually get into it. Once you walk into those shoes, then you have a definite better understanding of it. But I would encourage any woman who’s going through this, speak to your doctor, advocate for yourself, um, don’t be afraid.

Knowing that Black and Hispanic women experience VMS symptoms longer, I would have absolutely seeked this out earlier. You know, of course, it’s important, I don’t want the hormones, and that’s when my doctor said, “Why don’t we try VEOZAH?”

VEOZAH reduced my hot flashes within a few weeks, and I have continued to experience fewer hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause.

I’ve been taking VEOZAH for almost a year now. I like that VEOZAH is 100% hormone free. It’s just a wonderful thing not to be soaking wet.

I’ve been a flight attendant for 22 years, now retired, and when I had to put on the flight attendant uniform, the scarf was my nemesis, definitely. They wanted it around your neck, and I would kind of bend the rules a little bit. I learned to maneuver or manipulate it into a pretty necklace. So, that way it came on and off very easily.

Because I had commercial insurance, I was eligible for the VEOZAH Savings Card, and it was helpful.

My advice for any woman that is seeking treatment for VMS is do not be afraid to ask questions. I think it’s very important for us to know there are other options and you have a right to make a choice and can make a choice, absolutely. Visit VEOZAH.com to learn more.

VEOZAH can cause serious side effects, including liver problems. Your doctor will do blood tests before and during treatment. Stop VEOZAH and call your doctor if you have symptoms of liver problems, such as feeling more tired than usual, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, itching, yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stool, dark urine, or stomach pain.

Don’t use VEOZAH if you have cirrhosis, severe kidney problems, kidney failure, or take CYP1A2 inhibitors.

Kirstie’s story*

“After I had been experiencing the hot flashes for about 3 or 4 weeks, I decided that it was time to advocate for myself—that my journey was going to be different than my mother’s.”

I’m Kirstie and this is The VEOZAH Hot Seat.

Today I’m partnering with Astellas to share my story about moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause. It was a few years ago that I realized I was actually having hot flashes and night sweats.

It always starts in my chest and it’s sort of like that feeling when you drink something warm and you get that loom in your chest, that’s where it starts, and it goes from that to unbearable within seconds.

The cooling cap was always in the freezer. The minute I could feel that heat start to spread, I had to go and get it out of the freezer. Pulling that over my head was like pulling the North Pole onto my head, and the steam would just come off of me. It was alarming.

After I had been experiencing the hot flashes for about 3 or 4 weeks, I decided that it was time to advocate for myself, that my journey was gonna be different than my mother’s.

Once I started taking VEOZAH, in about a week, I noticed a big reduction in my symptoms. This has been my experience with VEOZAH, but everyone’s experience is different.

The frequency of the hot flashes decreased, and when I did have them, the intensity was dialed back a lot. I was able to sleep in pajamas, wear a robe, do all those things again. For 2 years, I couldn’t wear one.

I got a liver blood test before I was prescribed VEOZAH. My doctor monitored my liver with monthly blood tests for the first 3 months, then again at 6 and 9 months after starting VEOZAH.

This is a revolutionary time to be a woman of a certain age. We have many more options than we ever had before. I would love to share that with other women and make menopause normal to talk about.

Tamar’s story*

"I would recommend for people with hot flashes and night sweats, that you talk to your doctor, and I'm telling my story because VEOZAH has been helpful for me, and I hope that it can help other people as well."

I’m Tamar and welcome to The VEOZAH Hot Seat.

Today I’m partnering with Astellas to share my story about moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause.

It feels like somebody’s turned a heater on inside my chest. It just kind of creeps up and gets to my scalp. Then it gets kind of prickly.

Then, I will start to sweat. And I started waking up in the night, and I did figure out that if I took all my covers off as soon as I got hot, then I could kind of cool off before I got the night sweats, but that meant I spent a lot of the night taking my covers off, putting my covers back on, taking my covers off, waking up.

I would go to a racquet club I belonged to, to go to the pool to swim. I would bring a bottle of water to drink, and a bottle of ice, and I would wear two caps, because they seemed to last longer. I had one cap on, and then put a bunch of ice, and then another cap over that, and it would keep me cool for longer.

Before VEOZAH, I was getting hot flashes up to, probably, 5 an hour sometimes.

I used to do mosaics sitting in the corner of my house, because I worked with really small pieces of glass, and I needed to be able to see really clearly, and it was best if I did that in the sun. But when I started getting hot flashes, it was uncomfortable sitting in the sun. I’d be afraid that I was gonna overheat, and eventually I just avoided it all together.

I wish that I knew that VEOZAH was available sooner.

I’ve been on VEOZAH for 9 months now.

When I first started taking VEOZAH, it was in about a week that my symptoms decreased.

I got a liver blood test before I was prescribed VEOZAH.

My doctor monitored my liver with monthly blood tests for the first 3 months, then again at 6 and 9 months after starting VEOZAH.

I had no idea that there was anything else that I could do, and it had been such a relief for me to not have hot flashes all the time.

This has been my experience with VEOZAH, but everyone’s experience is different.

I wish that every woman experiencing night sweats and hot flashes knew that there were other options available.

I would recommend for people with hot flashes and night sweats, that you talk to your doctor, and I’m telling my story because VEOZAH has been helpful for me, and I hope it can help other people as well.
